How To Prepare For Your Photoshoot

A little preparation can make a surprising difference to how you feel—and how you look—on the day of your photoshoot.

The good news is that preparing for a professional photoshoot doesn't mean changing who you are. In fact, the opposite is true. The best portraits are created when you feel comfortable, confident and like yourself.

Here are a few simple things we recommend before your session.

Get a Good Night's Sleep

It might sound obvious, but a good night's sleep is one of the easiest ways to help yourself look and feel your best.

Being well rested helps reduce redness and puffiness around the eyes, gives your skin a fresher appearance and helps you feel more relaxed and confident in front of the camera.

When you feel awake, it naturally shows in your expression.

Stay Hydrated

Keeping well hydrated in the days leading up to your shoot has benefits that go far beyond your general health.

Hydrated skin often appears smoother and brighter, while drinking plenty of water can also help reduce bloating and leave you feeling more comfortable throughout your session.

There's no need to dramatically increase your water intake the night before—simply aim to stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment.

Avoid Trying New Skincare Products

We completely understand the temptation to treat yourself to a new skincare routine before your photoshoot.

However, introducing new products immediately before your session can sometimes cause irritation, redness or unexpected breakouts while your skin adjusts.

If you're planning to try something new, we'd recommend introducing it at least a week before your photoshoot so there's plenty of time for your skin to settle.

Let Your Tan Settle Naturally

For most portrait sessions, we recommend allowing a few days between applying self-tan and your photoshoot.

Fresh applications can sometimes appear darker than expected or show uneven areas that become more noticeable under professional studio lighting. Allowing the colour to settle usually creates a more natural, even finish.

Of course, there are exceptions. If you're preparing for a bodybuilding competition or another event where competition tanning is part of your presentation, we'll work with you to achieve the look that's appropriate for your discipline.

Remember... You Don't Need to Be Perfect

One of the biggest worries people have before a photoshoot is feeling that they need to change something about themselves first.

The truth is, you don't.

Professional lighting, thoughtful direction and years of experience allow us to create flattering portraits while keeping you looking authentic and recognisable. Small preparations can certainly help, but the most important thing you can bring to your session is simply yourself.

Pack Everything the Night Before

A little planning the evening before your photoshoot can make all the difference.

Rather than rushing around on the day, take a few minutes to have everything ready in advance. It helps you arrive feeling relaxed, organised and excited for your session.

We recommend having the following ready to go:

  • Your chosen outfits (and a few extra options if you're undecided)

  • Shoes and accessories

  • Jewellery

  • Hair and makeup products

  • Styling tools, if you'll be using them

  • Any props you'd like to include

  • Your travel plans or sat nav destination

  • Our contact number saved in your phone, just in case

One piece of advice we always give is don't worry about bringing too much.

If you're debating whether to pack something, bring it with you. It's far better to have an extra outfit, jacket or accessory and decide not to use it than spend the whole session wondering if it would have worked.

And don't worry if your clothes pick up a few creases on the journey—we have a clothes steamer in the studio and are always happy to help you look your best before we start shooting.

Many of our sessions begin by unpacking your outfits and finalising the shoot plan with the lighting, backdrops and styling that best complement your chosen looks. That's why we always encourage clients to bring plenty of options—it's much easier to decide what works in the studio than wish you'd packed something you left at home.
