A Different Kind Of Boudoir

Traditional boudoir tends to have a very recognisable visual language, with lingerie, a bedroom scene or related setting and sensual posing. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. There is something timeless about those visual cues, and a nostalgic nod to traditional boudoir can be beautiful in its own right.

But those elements don't have to be followed as a formula. They can be reinterpreted, played with and combined with other ideas to create something that feels more personal to the person in front of the camera.

Perhaps that's the real beauty of boudoir photography. The familiar doesn't have to be discarded — it can simply be reimagined.

It's easy to see how the visual links began. Boudoir literally means a woman's private room. Somewhere personal. Somewhere to be yourself. Somewhere away from the expectations of the outside world.

Interestingly, while boudoir has traditionally been defined as a woman's private room or dressing space, the idea of boudoir photography for men 'Dudeoir' is, technically, an evolution of the original concept — created to extend an experience that was traditionally associated with women to men. But why stop there? If boudoir can evolve beyond its original definition, it can evolve beyond gender too. Whoever you are, however you identify, there's no reason boudoir can't be an experience that belongs to you.

If we've already been comfortable expanding the idea of boudoir beyond its original definition to include men, why shouldn't we also be able to expand what boudoir photography itself looks like?

Perhaps boudoir photography doesn't actually need to look like the boudoir photography we're used to seeing.

Boudoir has a recognisable visual language, but that doesn't mean there's only one way to speak it.

Much of the boudoir photography you'll find today is centred around empowerment, and that's something we absolutely celebrate. Feeling confident in your own body, recognising your strength and embracing your personal power can be an incredibly positive experience.

But empowerment isn't the only reason someone might choose a boudoir shoot.

Sometimes boudoir is much more private. It's about the relationship between two people and creating something that belongs to them. It might be about bringing a partner's fantasy to life in a visual way, exploring a side of yourself you've never shared before, or simply showing someone the confidence they bring out in you.

It might be a secret gift to open on the morning of a wedding, something created to mark an anniversary or milestone, or simply a deeply personal way of saying I love you, I trust you, and this is how you make me feel.

There is a powerful language in allowing someone to see you in a way that is intimate, confident and entirely your own.

And that's perhaps what makes boudoir so interesting. The language may be recognisable, but the story you tell with it is completely personal.
